"Now, there goes a preacher!"

"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." I Cor. 2:2

There are more than a few preachers who think they can't be preachers if they don't teach something that pretends to be more than Christ Himself and the teaching we preach. These people who think this way are those curious ambitious types who want to stand out and who abandon our simplicity to try to attain to some special wisdom so that people will look at them and exclaim: "Now, there goes a preacher!" These types should be sent to Athens where people want to hear something new every day; these preachers seek their own glory rather than that of Christ, but they will end up departing in shame. Beware of these people and stay true to Paul who did not want to know anything else other than Jesus Christ, crucified.

Luther, Schriften, 10.II. Bd., S. 167 quoted in Martinus Luther Luther Brevier: Worte fuer jeden Tag. Wartburg Verlag 2007, p. 108 for April 1. [This German/English daily devotional of Luther quotes is GOLD. MH]

I'm not sure what the point is in the quote. Is it referring to heresy, pride, or what? What are these guys trying to add to Christ? Hope you can do a little expansion on that for me. Thanks!
